Overcoming Resistance to Reach New Career Heights

Women in the workplace usually face unique challenges that form resistance that can impact their career trajectories.

Some of these challenges are systemic barriers and biases that sometimes make the road to success feel like an uphill battle. Recognizing and strategically addressing these obstacles is one way to overcome resistance and pave the way for more inclusive and equitable workplaces. In this article, we'll explore common resistance women encounter in business and discuss practical strategies to overcome them.

Challenge 1: Gender Bias and Stereotypes

One of the most pervasive forms of resistance women encounter in the workplace is gender bias. This can range from overt discrimination to subtle stereotypes influencing competence and leadership ability perceptions.

"Leadership Ambition Gap" is a term discussed by Sheryl Sandberg in her book "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead."

She observes that men are more likely to aspire to top executive positions than women. This observation is attributed partly to internalized social norms and stereotypes. A common scenario is mentioned as an example, where male participants typically sit at the table during a meeting while women choose seats along the room's perimeter. This seemingly small action metaphorically represents how women sometimes place themselves on the sidelines in professional settings.

It's a behavior that is influenced by societal expectations and internalized beliefs about gender roles, which can lead to women inadvertently underselling their potential and capabilities in the workplace.

 Actionable Steps:

Build Self-Awareness: Understand how internalized gender norms may influence your perceptions and behaviors. Reflect on your self-limiting beliefs about your abilities and roles due to societal stereotypes. This awareness is the first step in challenging and changing these internal narratives.

Develop Confidence and Assertiveness: Work on building your confidence. This can involve working with a mentor, seeking feedback, and taking on challenges that stretch your skills and self-belief. Assertiveness training can also be beneficial, helping you to express your ideas and needs more effectively.

Challenge 2: Balancing Professional and Personal Responsibilities

Another big challenge is balancing work with personal and family responsibilities, which is sometimes perceived as a lack of commitment to their careers and affecting advancement opportunities.

And this is how most women try to prove their worth by doing everything without boundaries or clear priorities. They tend to take on more than they can handle again due to outdated belief systems that tell us that to excel in our careers, we must work hard to prove our worth.

Actionable Step 2: Change the Way You Approach Your Work, Ask For Help, and Perceive Yourself

Refine Time Management and Prioritization Skills: Efficiently managing time and prioritizing tasks is crucial. Focus on high-impact activities that showcase your organizational capabilities and contribution, and delegate when appropriate.

Work on being an effective collaborator: Collaboration is vital in most workplaces; working well in a team can improve your visibility and impact. It also helps break down stereotypes as you demonstrate your ability to lead, coordinate, and contribute effectively in a group setting.

Successes Acknowledgment: Men usually congratulate themselves more often, even when their success rate is average. On the other hand, women rarely congratulate themselves because they usually concentrate on the percentage that it wasn’t successful. Learning to acknowledge the little wins alongside the big ones will boost confidence and self-worth.

Challenge 3: Limited Access to Leadership Roles

Despite progress, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions. This lack of representation can create a cycle of resistance, as women have fewer role models and advocates in higher-level positions.

Actionable Step 3: Champion for Inclusivity and Seek Leadership Opportunities

Actively seek leadership opportunities in formal roles or through leading projects and initiatives. Advocate for inclusivity in leadership development programs and succession planning within your organization. Additionally, seek mentorship from leaders whose career paths you admire, and consider mentorship opportunities to support other women in your field.

The challenges women face in the business world are real but not unresolvable. It comes down to how we approach our careers and the mindset behind our actions.

Working on eliminating outdated limiting beliefs, working on our confidence levels, reaching out to people who can help us, and improving our overall well-being will help us overcome our resistance and make significant career strides. As we do so, we advance our professional journeys and contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable business environment for future generations of women leaders.

What have been your experiences and strategies for overcoming resistance in your career journey?
